Gorubathan is a small town in the Kalimpong district in West Bengal, India. It is situated on the east bank of river Neora, just 50 kilometer road distance from Siliguri. Locally, Gorubathan is known as Sombare. The name "Sombare" is comes from the name of Indian day "Sombar" (Monday). In every Monday, a haat (weekly village market) is organized at Gorubathan. So, >Gorubathan is famous for the day name ("Sombare") to local people. The town is popular for its natural beauty and there are various sites in and around the place that travelers can visit. Summer is the best time to visit in Gorubathan, due to its warm and pleasant weather but in winter it is very cold.

There are three distinct seasons are experienced in Gorubathan, namely summer, winter and monsoon. In summer, day-time is very nostalgic and warm and night-time is cooler. Summer is experienced from March to June. Average summer temperature range at Gorubathan is from 19°C to 35°C. Other hand in winter (November to February ) temperatures fall rapidly. Sometime it come downs around 2°C. In Gorubathan, monsoon season experienced From July to September. During this period a heavy rainfall expected at this area.

Attractions in Gorubathan

Gorubathan is situated on the east bank of the Neora river. It is famous for its beautiful landscape of the Neora River, hilly and alpine forests on the surrounding area. Many picnic spot are there towards the both bank of the Neora River. There are ruins of small fort called the Dalim Fort which is situated on top a hill. Due to hill area, Gorubathan is a ideal place for trekking.

Lava, a popular tourist destination for its scenic beauty, is on the way to Gorubathan. Faforkheti, a small village and a picnic spot for the locals, is situated on the road connecting Gorubathan with Lava. The picturesque village is becoming a tourist attraction. Dalim Fort, is a ruin of a small fort which is situated on top a hill near by Gorubathan.

Transport to go

Gorubathanis about 50 km from Siliguri and about 90 km from Kalimpong. From Siliguri, you can access 31 national highway till Damdim. From Damdim a road to the north goes to Lava through Gorubathan.

By Road : National Highway No.31 between Siliguri and Guwahati passes over Damdim. From Damdim to Lava have district road, which pass through Gorubathan. North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Bhutan Govt. Buses, Mini Buses, Private Buses and Taxi are available from Siliguri to Gorubathan. Journey time from Siliguri to Gorubathan is about 1 hours 30 minutes.

By Rail : Nearest railway station to Gorubathan is New Jalpaiguri. New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Railway Station are main railway station in this area. After you arrive at New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri, you should follow the road journey to reach at Gorubathan.

By Air : Nearest airport is Bagdogra. It is a domestic airport under Indian Army. All major air services are available from all over India. Distance between Bagdogra and Siliguri is 13 km. You can find out various vehicles to come in Siliguri, and then follow the above road route.
