Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep, literally means "a group of hundred thousand Islands", is located to the most south-west coast of India on the Arabian Sea. It is the smallest Union Territory in India with an area of 32 km2. The lagoon area covers about 4,200 km2 (1,600 mi2), the territorial waters area 20,000 km2 (7,700 mi2) and the exclusive economic zone area 400,000 km2 (150,000 mi2). Previously it was called as Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands. Its neighbouring state Kerala is situated average 250 km away on Malabar Coast. According to the census 2011 of India 64,429 people reside here.

Lakshadweep is the one of the world's most beautiful snow white coral sands island systems. It is also known for its exotic and sun-kissed beaches and lush green landscape. Lakshadweep is a group of thirty-nine small islands and islets, which are divided into three groups namely Amindivi group islands, Laccadive group islands and Minicoy group Islands. Kavaratti is the capital city as well as administrative headquarter and most important Island of Lakshadweep. Climate of Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep has experienced a tropical humid and warm climate with a little variation in the seasonal temperature range between 23° C and 31° C. Usually the climate of Lakshadweep is pleasant throughout the year. There is quite difference between the weather of summer and winter. April and May are the hottest months with an average maximum temperature of 31° C. December and January are the coldest months with an average minimum temperature of 23°C. Humidity ranging from 70 -76 per cent with a cool pleasure sea breeze is very common throughout the year in the territory. Light cotton tropical clothes are ideal throughout the year.

Climate of Lakshadweep islands has been classified into four distinct types of season round the year – summer, winter, monsoon and autumn.

Summer: Summer season continue from April to mid-July. It experiences very hot and sunny weather on day time, where the temperature varies from 24°C to 31°C. It is the ideal season for outdoor activities, mostly water sports and ship-based tourism.

Monsoon: Southwest Monsoon season continue from mid-July to September, where average rainfalls during this season is 165 cm and the temperature may varies between 27°C to 30°C. Strong wind and heavy rains are common in this region at monsoon. Sometime cyclones may effects badly. Any water based activities may prohibit at this time. A rain coat will come in handy during the monsoons. Ship-based tourism is closed but helicopter services are available at monsoon. During this time the greenery of the islands gets enhanced and the sight looks pleasing and soothing.

Autumn: During the month of October and November days are pleasant. Some effect of the northeast monsoon is felt in the islands in the form of light transitory showers. This is another ideal time to visitors to visit in the Lakshadweep. In sunny days make it possible to do any kind of activities during this time.

Winter: Winter season continue from December to February and temperature varies from 23°C to 29°C. It is not too cold like North India. It is another ideal season to visit in Lakshadweep for its cold and pleasant environment.

The weather of Lakshadweep is perfect to enjoy it mesmerizing beauty. Its tropical climate makes holidaying in this place one of the most pleasant and memorable experiences ever. Though the resort is open round the year, May to September is the ideal time to be on the islands.

Culture of Lakshadweep

Language and Religions: The people of Lakshadweep mainly use Malayalam language (more over 80% of total population) as their spoken dialect some other important languages of the territory are Jeseri, English and Mahl. English is accepted as primary official language of Lakshadweep. The people of the territory mainly follow the Islam (more over 90% of total population) and a little percentage follow Hinduism and Christianity.

Festivals in Lakshadweep: Near about 90% of total population in Lakshadweep belongs to Muslim religion. Usually the common people of the Union Territory celebrate several religious festivals throughout the year. Some popular festivals of Lakshadweep are Id-Ul-Fitr, Bakra Eid, Milad-Ul-Nabi and Muharram.
