Humayun's tomb

The second Mughal ruler Humayun (son of Babur) died in 1556. After his death in 1562 his widow, Hamida Banu Begum (first wife of Humayun) started to build a tomb honor to him. This tomb refers to as Humayun's Tomb or Humayun ka Maqbara. The entire construction of the tomb was completed in 1570. It is one of the best architectures during Mughal Empire which was designed by a Persian architect named, Mirak Mirza Ghiyath.

Humayun's tomb is surrounded by a very beautiful garden include several small monuments. This entire ground include Humayun's tomb is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The tomb is about 140 ft high with a big double-layered central dome which is built by Persian white tiles but the rest parts of the tomb is made of with red sandstone.

Humayun's tomb is located at Nizamuddin East in New Delhi, very close to the Nizamuddin train station on the bank of Yamuna River. It was under the control of Mughals till 1857. There after, the British Captain Hodson capture it by defeated the last Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah.

Char Bagh is a big garden of Persian-style which surrounded Humayun's tomb beautifully. It covers an area of 30-acre the entire garden is divided into four squares by paved walkways and two central water channels. Each of the four squares is further divided into nine smaller squares with pathways.

Tomb of Isa Khan was constructed in 1547 during Sur Dynasty. Isa Khan Niyazi was an Afghan noble in Sher Shah Suri's court. You also discover a mosque of Sur Dynasty near the Isa Khan’s tomb. It is called as Isa Khan’s Mosque. Both of the monuments located at Isa Khan’s Complex just outside the Humayun's tomb.

Bu Halima's Tomb and Garden is located about 101 m west of Humayun’s tomb. When tourists visit to this complex through the main entrance then it will be the first monument to see. It is believed that Bu Halima was noble woman at Mughal court.

Afsarwala Tomb and mosque is located to the southwest end of the complex. Afsarwala tomb was a place where the noble man of Mughal Court resided. The tomb was created by Mughal ruler during 1566. you also discover a mosque adjacent to the tomb.

Arab Sarai was built by Hamida Banu Begum in 1561 next to the Afsarwala mosque of Humayun's tomb Complex. It was a rest house for Arab merchants or Persian artisans and craftsmen who were brought in to work on the construction of Humayun's tomb.

Besides of these some more attractions are waiting for you just out side the Humayun's tomb Complex. Among these most significant are the Nila Gumbad or Blue Dome and Chillah Nizamuddin Aulia, architecture of Tughlaq period (before Mughals).

Various international flights of different airlines are available at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in daily basis from across the world. After reaching to this airport you can achieve to your destination through a car. A tourist can reach Humayun's Tomb from other Indian States by a domestic flight.

If you are a citizen of India from neighboring states of Delhi then rail journey would be suitable one for you.
