Dehradun, literally mean "the place for camp (Dera - camp and Doon - Valley)", is situated in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between the rivers Ganges and Yamuna. The city serves as the capital city of Uttarakhand and also the administrative headquarters of Dehradun District. It is placed just foothills of Himalayans act as an entry way to several tourist destinations like Musoorie, Nainnital, Aulli, Haridwar, Rishikesh including the Hindu’s holiest Chardham. Dehradun is a very ancient town and its history was related with the great Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. People believe that after the clash between demon Ravan and Lord Ramah, Ramah visited this city. Dronacharya, a great character of Mahabharata, who teaches Kouravas and Pandabas believed to have been resided here. After a long period in medieval age we found that the region was known as Sudhnagar (in 7th century) and later it came to be recognized as the name of Kaalsi. Dehradun was invaded by several foreign powers namely, Mahmmud Ghazni in 1368, Ruahela Njibudulo in 1757 and Ghullam Qadir in 1785. 

According to the census of 2011 India, the city has a population of 578425. Maximum percentage of the population follows Hinduism as their religions and they usually speak in Hindi. Travel by Airways
There is an airport in Dehradun name the Jolly Grant Airport which located about 23 km away from city hub. You will get lots of government and private flights from Delhi to this city. Indira Gandhi Airport is the closest international airport to the city. 

Travel by Railways
Dehradun is well connected to other major cities of India through a good railway network. Dehradun Railway Station is the major station in the city which receives regular trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Varanasi. You will get several express trains to the station like the Shatabdi, Musoorie Express, Jan Shatabdi and Doon Express. 

Travel by Roadways
Dehradun is very well connected to other major points of India through the NH-72A and several state highways. You will get regular deluxe buses from Delhi to Dehradun. Shimla and Mussoorie also directly connected to Dehradun by bus. Kalinga War Memorial is located at Sahastradhara Road in Dehradun. This is a unique War memorial in the world which was created by the army in memory of its enemy. It was erected by British Army in memory of its opponent Gorkha Regiment at the Gurkha Fort. This memorial was constructed after the Anglo-Gorkha war in 1815. 

Forest Research Institute is declared a deemed university. It was established in 1991 in Dehradun by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. It covers an area over 450 hectares, with the outer Himalaya forming its back drop. This institute be opened for tourists from 9 am to 1 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. 

Mindrolling is a large Buddhist Monastery about 185 ft high and it covers an area of about 100 sq ft located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It is world's largest Stupa and a magnificent example of Buddhist art and architecture. It was constructed in 1676. Contact number is 0135-2640556. 

Chetwode Hall is the Indian Military Academy constructed in 1930 by Sir Philip Chetwode. It is must see museum in Dehradun shows thousands collections of 20th century military artifacts. It has an impressive Museum, Lecture Hall, stocked Libraries, and the InfoTech Cell along with two Internet Labs. 

Clock Tower is located on Rajpur and Gandhi Roads crossing in Dehradun. It was Built in pre-independent age by the British. It is a six-faced tower might have adorned a prestigious position in the history of this hilly city. Now this tower presents only as an elegant monument of the past years rather than a clock tower. 

The Char Siddhs, comprising a group of four temples around Dehradun namely Lakshman Siddh (12 km from the city), Kalu Siddh (near Baniyawala), Manak Siddh (near Shimla Bypass Road) and Madu Siddh (near Premnagar). It is believed that visiting all these four Siddhs in a single day will fulfill a devotee's wishes. 

Ram Rai Darbar was built by Guru Har Rai's son during 17th century. It attracts thousands of Sikh pilgrims from the nearby state of Punjab. This unique monument is situated in the heart of Dehradun city. 

Robber's Cave Also known as Guchchu Pani, is located about 7 km away from Dehradun city center. This cave is surrounded by hills and is a beautiful getaway for those looking for picnicking here. 

Sahastradhara is a Sulphur water spring located about 13 km away from Dehradun. It is believed to have exceptional medicinal value and the dripping caves and a bath in the Baldi River near the spring are said to rejuvenate the body and soul. 

Rajaji National Park was founded in 1966 with an area of 820 sq. km. it is located in the valley of Shivalik ranges. There have 23 species of mammals and 315 of fauna. This Park is named after Late Shri C. Rajgoplalachari. 

Besides of these some more important tourists spots in and around Dehradun are Tapkeshwar Temple, Sai Darbar Temple, Tapovan, Jaspal Rana Shooting Ranges, Tiger View Jungle Camp, RIMC, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, etc.
