Once famed for being the flagship destination for major Bollywood movies, Pahalgam, situated at an altitude of 7200 ft by the banks of River Lidder is still one of the prime destinations of Jammu and Kashmir tourism. Kolahoi Glacier is the top most attractions of Pahalgam. From Srinagar, Pahalgam is around 95 kilometers.

History

Initially, Pahalgam, which means land of shepherds, was mainly inhabited by shepherds. As a majority of Kashmir was mainly dominated by the Mughals since the 15th century, a rich Muslim culture, architecture and heritage is spotted across different places across Kashmir. Turko-Mughal Military General Mirza Muhammad Haidar Dughlat ruled the place in the name of Emperor Humayou here.

Betaab Valley:
Named after a hit Bollywood movie Betaab, starred by Indian actors Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh, Betaab Valley is 15 Km from Pahalgam and is rich with natural beauty, serenity and tranquility. You will get permission to drive inside the valley until an extent and from that point you need to hire or get into a local transport to reach inside the valley. Trekking, camping and spending some idle time on the lap of nature are some of the best things to do in the Betaab Valley. You can get affordable accommodation here, along with internal transport facilities.

Sheshnag Lake:
There is an old myth that Sheshnag, the Snake God in Hindu mythology dug the lake himself and resides there. It is still believed by Hindus that He still lives here and that’s why this lake has become a notable Hindu pilgrimage on the way to Amarnath Yatra. This is 23 kilometers from Pahalgam.

Rafting in River Lidder: Besides enjoying the picturesque view of the amazing Pahalgam, try out to be sporty. If you can show the dexterity then don’t miss a change to raft in the River Lidder. This can be pretty adventurous for you.

Gauri Shankar Temple:
The Amarnath Yatra begins from this ancient temple of Pahalgam.

Jamia Masjid Mosque:
Beautifully designed and preserved the Jamia Masjid is set on the Lidder and is the perfect reminiscence of the enriched Muslim art in Kashmir.

How to reach Gulmarg ?

You can reach Srinagar by air, train and by road. All the major cities are well connected with the Capital of J&K. From Srinagar, Pahalgam it is around 95 Kms. From there you can hire taxis or can also get in to the private luxury deluxe bus services or by the Government Buses that run everywhere across Jammu and Kashmir.
