Jaldapara National Park

One of the most famous tourist destination in Dooars is Jaldapara National Park (formerly Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary), situated in Alipurduar district of West Bengal, India, nearby the Indo-Bhutan border. It belongs into the heavy rainfall zone, so the forest is mainly savannah covered with tall elephant grasses. River Torsha runs through the National Park. Jaldapara forests was constituted as wildlife sanctuary in the year of 1941 for the protection of Wildlife, particularly one-horned Rhinoceros and it was declared as Jaldapara National Park on May, 2012.

Other than One-horn Rhinos, this forest is the home for the Asiatic elephants, the Royal Bengal Tiger, deer, swamp deer, sambhar, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, wild pig, Indian bison, different varieties of leopard, several Indian birds both residential and migratory, peafowl and many more. Visit inside the deep forest for search of wild animals is permissible. Elephant ride and jeep safari is very popular among the tourists, preferably at early-morning.

In winter, temperature comes down to 6°C where in summer its goes more than 39°C. But the average temperature ranges may varies between 10°C to 30°C. Jaldapara National Park belongs in heavy rainfall zone. Where May to October known as rainy season. Average annual rainfall is 300 cm.

Transport

By Road: Jaldapara is well connected by road with Darjeeling, Siliguri and other towns of North Bengal. North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Bhutan Govt. Mini Buses and Private Buses are available from Siliguri to Alipurduar via Madarihat. Journey time from Siliguri is about 4 hours.

Road Route:-
a) Siliguri -> Jalpaiguri (via New Teesta Bridge) -> Maynaguri -> Dhupguri -> Gairkata -> Birpara -> Madarihat (204 km)
b) Siliguri -> Sevoke -> Bagrakote -> Mal -> Chalsa -> Nagrakata -> Binnaguri -> Birpara -> Madarihat (214 km)

By Rail: Nearest railway station is Falakata (19 Kilometers from the sanctuary) and Madarihat (7 kilometers away). But all train is not arrived here. New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Railway Station are main railway station in this area. You can change train from New Jalpaiguri or can follow the road journey from New Jalpaiguri to the park or Siliguri to the park.

By Air: Nearest airport is Bagdogra. It is a domestic airport under Indian Army. All major air services are available from all over India. Distance between Bagdogra and Siliguri is 13 km. You can find out various vehicles to come in Siliguri, and then follow the above road route
