Lataguri is a small village located on the fringes of the Gorumara National Park in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India. It is one of the entry points to Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Buxa Tiger Reserve and Neora Valley National Park are just 2 hours driving distance from Lataguri and Jaldapara National Park is about 1 hour and 30 minutes driving distance. Lataguri is famous for its full of dense forests and riverine grassland. Besides the quiet and calm surrounding, the main attractions are forest Watch Towers in Gorumara National Park and "Nature Interpretation Centre" at Lataguri, which gives information about the flora and fauna of the area. It is an ideal place for nature and animals lovers as it is a home to many species of flora and fauna. A few roadside restaurants ("Dhabas") and hotels cater for tourists.

Apart from the natural beauty and close-vicinity of different tourist destinations, Lataguri is also famous for its reach heritage and history, which featuring a combined culture of numerous tribes and migrates. Raj Bangshis, the Mech, the Ravas and the Totos are native tribes in Lataguri. Limbus, Bengalis, Lepcha, Uraons, Nageshias and Mundas were migrated to the region and resides here with a cultural harmony. Lataguri celebrates different festivals such as Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Teesta Burir Puja, Manosha Puja and different fairs. Chor Chunni and Dham Gaan are most popular folk arts in this region, which exhibits the rise and fall of various mythological characters.

Best time to visit Lataguri

Winter season between December and February is the best time to visit Lataguri due to the pleasant weather conditions with low humidity. Otherwise, the tourists can visit Lataguri at any time of the year except the rainy season. At monsoon, all wildlife sanctuary is closed from 15th June to 15th September.

Places to visit in Lataguri

Gorumara National Park: Gorumara National Park is situated on the bank of rivers Murti and Raidak in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. It is a medium-sized forest, covering an area of 80 sq km in the foothills of the great Himalaya in the Dooars region. Riverine grasslands and moist deciduous forests are main vegetation of the park. Sal is the most common and valuable tree in this park, which is commonly known as Siliguri Sal; Teak, simul, siris, khair forests are also available. it is also a home of diverse variety of birds and animals. Gorumara National Park is important and famous for its natural population of One-Horned Rhinoceros. Therefore it is perfect place for both the nature and animal lovers.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary: Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest Sanctuaries in India. It situated in the Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. The Murti River flows by the western boundary of it and the Sanctuary is totally located on the plain land of the Doors. Just 9.6 square kilometres area is bounded in this Sanctuary. It is a very small Sanctuary in India compare with others. The Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is filled with dense greenery which provides a natural home to the animals and birds living here.

Rovers Point: It is a land of unknown birds which is a beautiful spot to stay. The tourists can easily get to this place as it is located near to the Buxa fort. This place has many striking and stunning spots for the tourists to explore.

Jayanti Mahakal: It is located at the bank of River Jayanti. It is a best place for trekking that shares a natural border with Bhutan which serves to be the tourists’ attraction. Apart from this it has a cave called Mahakal cave which is quite slender and gloomy but it is also a tourist’s attraction

How to reach Lataguri

By Air: Bagdogra is the nearest Airport to Lataguri that is located in Siliguri. It is a domestic airport and connected with all major cities in India. It is also the fastest mode of transportation. After arriving at Bagdogra airport you may follow the road journey to reach Lataguri.

By Rail: Lataguri has a small railway station but does not function properly. New Jalpaiguri railway station is the nearest railway station to Lataguri, which connects all major Indian cities and towns. After arriving at New Jalpaiguri railway station you may follow the road journey to reach Lataguri.

By Road: Lataguri is well connected with New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, Bagdogra Airport, Siliguri and New Mal Jn by road. North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) and various private bus services are available with a cheap fare. You may also hire a share-taxi or reserve taxi (Sumo, Bolero, Inova, Xylo, Indica, etc) to reach at Lataguri with reasonable price. It is advisable to bargain about taxi fare before boarding on the Taxi. NBSTC and private buses are also available to reach at Lataguri from Kolkata and other major cities in West Bengal and Assam.
