Haridwar, the Gateway to Gods

Haridwar, literally mean "the gateway to Lord Vishnu" (Hari - Vishnu and Dwar - Gateway), is one of the most sacred religious sites (teertha-sthan) out of seven for Hindus where the famous Kumbh Mela is organized after rotation of every twelve Years and Ardha Kumbh after every six years. According to the Hindu mythology, the drops of Amrit (Elixir) fell into the Brahmkund and so a holy dip in this place during Maha Kumbh Mela is very sacred for Hindus.

Haridwar is first towns where Ganga River emerges from the mountains to planes after flowing 253.1 km from its source at Gomukh. Haridwar city serves as also the administrative headquarters of the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India. This city is the entry point of four main pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand (Chardham) Namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Har-Ki-Pauri is the most sacred place in Haridwar City, as Lord Vishnu is said to have his footprint on a stone here and the Holy water of Ganges touches it always.

Haridwar is a small city. It covers an area of 12.3 km2. The city is about average 297 meters above sea level between Shivalik Ranges to the North and the Ganga to the South. Hindi is the main spoken dialect in Haridwar but some other languages like Punjabi, Garhwali, and English are also used here. As per the census report of India, the city has an approximate population of 228,832 in 2011.

Tour spots in and around Haridwar

Har ki Pauri or Gangadwara is located about 1.5 km away from Haridwar city hub. It was constructed by Vikramaditya during 1st century BC. Brahmakund Ghat is the most sacred on the bank of Ganga River at Har-ki-Pauri. Thousands of devotees reach here to take a holy bath at this Ghat. 

Chandi Devi Temple is located about 6 km away from Haridwar on the top of Neel Hill. It was constructed by Suchat Singh in 1929 honor to Goddesses Chandi. The main idol of the temple was established by Shankaracharya during the 8th century. It maintains a distance of about 3 km from Chandighat. 

Mansa Devi Temple is placed just 0.5 km away from Haridwar on the top of Bilwa Parvat in the Shivalik Mountain Ranges. It is Shakti Mata Temple or Shidha Pith dedicated to Goddess Mansa. There have two idols of Goddess Mansain the temple, one with eight arms and the other one three-headed with five arms. 

Maya Devi is an ancient temple located about 0.5 km away from Haridwar City. It is one of 51 Shakti pith constructed during the 11th century where the heart and navel of goddesses Sati had fallen. 

Daksha Mahadev Temple is situated about 4 km away from the city hub in the south Kankhal town. According to Hindu mythology, King Daksha Prajapati, father of goddesses Sati, was later killed by Virabhadra, born out of Shiva's anger. Sati Kund is another famous place close to it. 

Piran Kaliyar is one of the most famous Dargahas for Muslims. It was built by Ibrahim Lodhi during 13th-century respect to Sufi Saint Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari. This shrine is visited by thousands of devotees during the annual Urs festival. 

Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar is a Bird Sanctuary situated about 3.5 km away from Haridwar town on the bank of Ganges River at the Bhimgoda Barrage. It is a lovely sanctuary where lots of migratory birds reach during the winter season. 

Sureshwari Devi Temple is spotted at the middle of Rajaji National Park. This park is also a tourist attraction located about 9 km away from Haridwar and the temple also attracts lots of devotees around the year. It is a temple of goddesses Sureshwari. 

Pawan Dham temple is an example of well modern architecture which completely made of with glass pieces. It was constructed by Swami Vedantananda Ji and an institute close to the temple is growing under the leadership of Swami Sahaj Prakash Ji.

Bharat Mata is an eight-story temple maintains a height of about 181 ft. It was constructed in 1983 by Indira Gandhi on the banks of the river Ganges in Haridwar to the respect of Bharat Mata (Mother India). 

Sapt Rishi Ashram and Sarovar a lovely tourist spot should not have to miss when you are in Haridwar. It is located about 5 km away from Haridwar Railway station. It is believed that once seven great sages or Saptarishis meditated here. 

Shantikunj is the headquarter of the social organization All World Gayatri Parivar (AWGP). It was established by Pandit Sriram Sharma. It is located about 6 km away from Haridwar Bus Station towards Rishikesh. 

Some other major tourist spots in and around Haridwar are Cheela Dam, Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust, Anandamayi Maa Ashram, Ramanand Ashram, Jairam Ashram, Parad Shivling, Bhimgoda Tank, Doodhadhari Barfani Temple etc.

How to reach Haridwar

Travel by Roadways
Haridwar is well connected through the national highway 45 and 58. NH 45 connects the city to Delhi and other major cities of Uttarakhand. NH 58 connects Haridwar with Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorki, and Badrinath and NH 74 connects Haridwar to Kashipur, Kicha, Nagina, Pilibhit, and Bareilly. Travel by Railways
Haridwar Railway Station is the main station in the city. It falls under the control of the Northern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. This station is directly connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Indore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Gwalior and Nagpur with regular train services. Some important trains which regularly connected with Haridwar are Shatabadi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, Mussoorie Express, etc.
