Ooty Hill Station

The lovely hilly city, Udhagamandalam is usually spoken as Ooty or some time Ootacamund. It serve as headquarter of Nilgiri (Nil - blue and Giri - Mountain, Blue Mountains) District. Ooty is a small town covers an area of 36 sq. km. on the region of Nilgiri Mountain Range about 7501 ft above the mean sea level. Ooty is one of the most visited destinations in south India due to its pleasant weather through out the year and the picturesque hilly view. Nilgiri Mountains are the extended form of Western Ghat and Ooty is the most popular among these. It is located at the tri-junction of three states of south India namely Tamilnadu, kerala and Karnataka.

The climatic characteristic of Ooty remains pleasant throughout the year. Winter season (mid-November to mid-February) of the city is cooler respect to other Indian cities. During this season temperature ranges varies from 6°C to 14°C sometime it falls near 2 dc. Summer season of the city is very pleasant from March to mid-June when temperature ranges varies from 17°C to 20°C sometime it reach up to 25°C. The city receives good rainfall (average annual 120 cm) during June to September. Beside of these three seasons, two more whether seasons namely spring (February to March) and autumn (October-November) are also observed in Ooty.

The people of Ooty mainly survive with the profession of agriculture or tourism. According to the census report 2001 India, approximately 93922 people reside in Ooty. Among them Males constitutes 50.01% of the population and rest are female. The most frequent spoken dialect of the city is Tamil and a local tribal language named Paniya. Some other languages like English, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam are also spoken by the city people. Major religions follows by city-locals are Hindu and Christian. Few Jain and Muslim also reside here with a lower percent.

How to reach Ooty?

Travel by Roadways
The city authority of Ooty has maintained a well connected road network with several local roads including a national highway named NH No - 67. NH - 67 is directly connected to the neighboring states Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram), Karnataka (Bangalore) and Pondicherry (UT). And the local city roads of Ooty are connected with several state cities namely Mettupalayam, Kotagiri, Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Gudalur, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Sathyamangalam, Karur, Dindigul, Chennai, Thiruchirapalli, Madurai, Thanjavur and Kanyakumari. Regular bus services are available here from the above mentioned cities which are connected to Ooty.

Travel by Railways
If you planned to go Ooty then Mettupalayam Railway Station would be the best detonation station to you. It is the nearest big junction from Ooty located about 46 km away. Regular express and passenger trains are available to the city from Coimbatore and Chennai. Ooty is a hilly region where broad gauge rail services not found. An alternate meter gauge service is provided here from Mettupalayam (a station at foothill) to Ooty. This meter gauge line stations are communicated with several beautiful Toy Trains. Toy Train journey is a lovely experience as it go across several beautiful sites. Toy Train journey is not safer for tourist due to its irregular service.

Travel by Airways
Coimbatore Domestic Airport is closest airport from the city. It is located about 99 km away from Ooty. Regular direct flights are landed here from the major cities of India like Chennai, Kozhikode, Bangalore and Mumbai. Indian Airlines flies Delhi-Kochi via Mumbai and Coimbatore. It takes around 4 hrs to reach from the airport to Ooty.

Tourist spots in and around the town, Ooty

Ooty is one of the most popular summer holiday destinations in India. Millennium of travelers come here year after year to catch the lovely view of Ooty mountain including several wonderful lakes, dense greenery hilly forests, extensive grasslands, endless tea gardens and many more. Some major tour spots in and around Ooty are Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak, Pykara River, Kamaraj Sagar Dam, etc. You can make a summer trip to this city when climate remain pleasant.

Botanical Garden is one of the most popular spots which attract the tourist across the world. The garden covers an area of 22 acre on Ooty hill at an elevation of 2401 meters above sea level. This Botanical Garden was established during 1847. now it is under the control of Tamil Nadu state Government. The garden has a 20 million year old fossilized tree.

Ooty Lake is situated just behind the central Bus Stand. It is man-made lake created by John Sullivan during 1823 to 1825 with an area of 65 acres. You will be offered to make a trip here with a Boat House across the lake which is a major tourist attraction of Ooty.

Ooty Mountain Railway is a great attraction of Ooty. It was established by British during 1908. This railway network is standing on meter gauge line from Mettupalayam Station to Coonoor hill Station and Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. The trains of this root are small and motorized by diesel. Usually these are called as Toy Train.

Doddabetta Peak is the highest peak with an altitude of 2623 meters in the Nilgiris Mountain. The peak is located about 11 km away from Ooty Town. It lies between the Western and Eastern Ghats and you will observe a panoramic view of the plains of Coimbatore and the flat highlands of Mysore through the TTDC telescope of the peak.

Pykara River is one of the best tourist attractions in Ooty located about 20 km away from city center. A placid dam and power plant was created on the way of the river which is called as Pykara Dam. And the river also produced lovely waterfalls which are called as Pykara Falls. The dam is surrounded by forests where you will find a forest rest House and a boat.

Avalanche Lake is located about 25 km away Ooty Town. Another important place, named Emerald Lake, also located near Avalanche Lake. These two lakes are surrounded by thick forests which are perfect for adventure but the maximum of these forests alongside the dam are restricted to travelers.

Ooty Rose Garden is one of the largest gardens in India which is previously known as Jayalalita Rose Garden. It is a government property located just a km away from Charring Cross at Vijayanagaram at the center of Ooty Town.

Annamalai Temple is a situated about 21 km away from Ooty Town. It is dedicated to Lord Muruga who is known as the lord of 7th Hill house. You discover a lovely pictorials view from an observatory point at the top of hill close to the temple.

There have lots of suitable places for film shooting in Ooty like 6th miles and 9th Mile(Shooting Medu). Usually these places termed its name by the distance quantity. You can easily reach here from Ooty town with a four wheeler.

Kamaraj Sagar Dam is located about 10 km away from the Ooty bus terminal. The spot is perfect for picnicking and also it well known for film shooting.
