Wangdue Phodrang

Wangdue Phodrang is a tourism hub located in Central Bhutan. This is one of those very few places that offer tourists a chance to spend tie amidst the cultural and natural delights. It offers mesmerizing views of the Dzong and Valley.

This is among the biggest Dzongkhags all over the nation. The entire district covers an area of 4308 sq km which again ranges highly from 800m to 580m thereby offering different climatic condition which still ranges from the subtropical to snowy and extremely cold. From South to North, the temperature is very distinct.

As per the legends, once Zhabdrung Rinpoche found a cute boy playing on the banks of the river and he loved his innocence so much that he took the decision to name it dzong Wangdi’s place and this is how the entire district came to be known as Wangdi or Wangdue Phodrang.

Attractions and Places to See

Wangdue Town/ Bajo:
This is one of the amazing places in Wangdue Town/ Bajo, which resembles a place covered with snow. You will go back in time and love to stay here. You will not find a vast number of people as only a few people and shops are here with the only way to earn is through animal husbandry and farming.

There are multiple things to see in the town, but the most mesmerizing thing is the slate carving culture and bamboo weaving. Since generations, you will find the families here are associated with weaving bamboo and selling these bamboo products and stone carving. You will mostly find these amazing handcrafted things in the local market which becomes great to give a place in your house. The best time to visit the town is on Saturdays and Sundays.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong:
This was built back in 1638 which sit on top of the cliff. In the year 2012, the dzong caught fire, and the immense rebuilding work is ongoing, which will end in 2021. So if you are planning to visit Wangdue Phodrang district right now, it’s unfortunate that you will not be allowed to g to the dzong.

Well, don’t get disheartened, as there is a tiny story collected from the locals about the dzong that while Buddhist monks were in search for a good site for dzong, you found four ravens which flew in four different directions. This was the holy symbol which denotes that Buddhism will spread across all the direction. This stands where two rivers meet, which are Mo Chu and Pho Chu.

Rinchegang Village:
Rada Lhakhang is the temple of the Sha Radap which is situated in the vicinity of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong. This temple rejoices the guardian of the goddess who is named as Sha Radap. As per the locals, it is a custom that newborns are brought here while they are being named and are given blessings by the presiding monks.

From the many festinating things here, one of the most distinct and interesting customs here is rolling the dice which is in the Temple compound, and meanwhile one needs to pray. It is said that the deity fulfills the wish of everyone.

Gasleo and Nahee Village:
This is the twin village which is located on the west of Wangdue Phodrang. It is widely known as a famous picnic spot or if you are planning for a day trip. Exploring the villages here will provide you with new experiences, as the rural Bhutanese lifestyle is way much different. You will find the farmers and village with great hospitality and friendly attitude towards the tourists. It is always recommended to visit this place during autumn, which is the harvest time.

Adha and Rukha Villages:
This is considered as the rural gem located in the South of the Wangdue town. If you want to spend under the night sky or adventurous night, you can choose tenting and enjoy the starlit sky. If you want to help them, you can also opt for a night stay in the farmhouse and enjoy the place along with the unmatched view with the hospitality of the locals.

Since the villages are located at low altitude, summers ate not so pleasant, but autumn has a lot to show to the visitors. With their amazing behavior of the locals and their delicacies, stay assured that you are going to enjoy the night stay.
