History

Sonmarg is mainly known for being a gateway of the ancient silk route besides, Gilgit connecting the crown of India Kashmir along with China and other countries in the Gulf. The much acclaimed Zojila Pass, one of the highest passes of road transport in the world in 15 kilometers east NH-1D and is still the base camp of the Indian Army in Ladakh.

Krishnasar Lake
If you are in Sonmarg, you simply can’t afford to miss a sight of Lake Krishnasar, situated at a height of 3801 m. travelers to this destination can indulge themselves in trout fishing, one of the most exciting activities in this hill stop.

Nilagrad
This is the confluence point of a beautiful mountain river and the historic Indus River. The pure red color water there would be one of the finest views. Locales here has a strange believe that the water has a curative power. This is the reason why thy bathe once in a week in the river. Sundays are pretty rushed here. So better not choose the weekend if you are planning to take a dip in the water for any skin cure.

Baltal
Baltal is located at the foot of the great Zojila Pass and close to Ladakh. In fact, it is also close to the Amarnath Cave at a distance of 5 km. Many pilgrims to Amarnath stop here and settle in cams during nights.

Trout or masher fishing at Lake Krishnasar and Sind River can be quite adventurous experience for you. Sledging on the white glaciers can be a new experience for you. Those who are passionate trekker can try routes to the lakes respectively Gangabal, Krishnasar, Vishansar etc. trekkers would miss the spectacular view of the Nichnai Pass, if they don’t take that road. The breathtaking view of the valley is incomparable.

How to Reach Sonmarg ?

Sonamarg is well connected with Srinagar the Capital of J&K. The domestic airport is well connected with all major cities across India. You can get regular flights to New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Trivandum and more. Besides, the Jammu Tawai railway station is interconnected with all major destinations of India. In the south until Trivandum, you can avail trains. The roads of J&K are interlocked therefore, travelling to Srinagar to anywhere across J&K is not a big deal. You can get shared taxis, rented cars, government transportation such as buses to reach Sonmarg.
