Port Blair Division and Town

Port Blair division or Tehsil covers an area of 125.4 sq km in South Andaman District. It serves as the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Main town of the division also called as Port Blair (Town), covers a small area about 16.64 sq km, is the most important and busiest part of the Island. This town has a municipal council of South Andaman district and it is the main entry point to the islands.

Port Blair derived its name from British Lieutenant, Archibald Blair who wanted to establish a colony here in 1789. Later it became a prison (Cellular Jail or Kalapani constructed in 1906) where Indian freedom fighters were incarcerated at the pre-independent period of India. After independent, Port Blair became the base for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard and it also the headquarters of the Tri Services Command.

According to the census report 2011 India approximately 100,608 people reside in Port Blair. Among them, males constitute 52% of total population and females 48%. Majority of the population of the city follow Hinduism as their religion. And they speak with several dialects like Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Nicobarese and English. Among these English is accepted for administrative uses.

Climate of Port Blair

The climate of Port Blair is very pleasant and comfortable throughout the year. Andaman-Nicobar Islands is placed in the Torrid or hot climatic zone and it totally encircled with the ocean, Bay of Bengal. So, there have no winter season but rain is a common attribute in the city. The weather seasons of Port Blair can be divided in two major types namely monsoon and summer.

Summer Season in Port Blair : Normally summer Season of the city is continued from end January to June. Average temperature in summer varies from 22°C to 31°C and some destructive storms hit the city during this season. Port Blair receive tropical monsoon climate with little variation in average temp and large amounts of rainfalls throughout the year

Monsoon Season in Port Blair : Normally the monsoon season of Port Blair is continued for a long term. It starts from mid-May and continues to November. The average annual rainfall of Port Blair is approximately 280 cm and the city receives substantial rainfall except the months of January, February and March.

Tourist attractions in Port Blair

Cellular Jail or Kalapani tourism
Cellular Jail is national memorial place, dedicated to the freedom fighters of India. It was constructed by the British ruler in 1906 as jail for Indian political prisoners. Today, it is a tour spot open throughout the week except Mondays and Public Holydays.

Corbyn's Cove beach
It is a beautiful beach located close to Port Blair town. This beach is perfect for swimming and watching the sunset. You also found here a Japanese Bunkers Which was created by the Japanese army during World War II. In the year of 2004 enormous tsunami beaten the beach very badly so be careful to swim.

Samudrika Marine Museum
It is located at Delanipur in Port Blair which shows the in formations about five different sections like history, Geographical, natives of Andaman, Archaeology and finally the Marine life.

Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI)
CARI is about 4 km away from the Vir Savarkar Airport of Port Blair. This institute expertise performs research on different aspects of Agriculture and farming like Cattle, Pig, Goat, Rabbit, Turkey, Quail, Guinea Fowl, Duck, Fisheries Ponds, etc. It is easily accessible from Port Blair.

Anthropological Museum
It is an Interesting Anthropological museum which informs the traditional cultures of the various natives of Andaman and Nicobar Island. This museum is opened every days except Thursdays and Public Holidays.

Chatam Saw Mill
Chatam is located at the northern most edge of Port Blair division. It takes around 15 minutes by bus from STS Bus terminal; private buses are also available in this root. You will found here the oldest Asian saw mill in the village.

Snorkeling at Jolly Buoy
Jolly Buoy is one of the most visited spots in Port Blair. This place is famous for its superb Corals and fishes where you can do snorkeling.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park
It is located at Wandoor, 29 km away from Port Blair city. You can reach here with a local bus or any private car.

Mini Zoo
It is a medium size zoo containing some species which is now shifted to its new place at Chidiya Tapu.
